*You will need a true filtered Shortwave UV light or a Longwave UV light in order to see the best fluorescent colors shown in the pictures.*
*Regular black lights, purple lights, or blue lights DON'T work for fluorescent minerals, so make sure you use the proper indicated UV light*
*Please keep in mind that the higher the UV light's wattage is, the brighter the fluorescent reaction will be*
This nice sized FANTASY ROCK contains a couple of specs of the super rare TUGTUPITE, sodalite, hackmanite (tenebrescent sodalite), chkalovite, calcite, a few spots of uranyl ion, polylithionite, and arfvedsonite. This is a small but very complex and beautiful piece. Not much tenebrescence.
Weight: 5.049 oz (143.13 g)
Size: 3.25" x 2" x 1.25"
Origin: Ilimaussaq Complex in Greenland.
Fantasy Rocks are one of the most sought after fluorescent minerals in the world due to the beautiful and complex combination of colors when exposed to UV lighting. Tugtupite is one of the most sought after gemstones because of its rarity, exclusivity, color, and its tenebrescence; and when it is mixed with other beautiful fluorescent minerals from Greenland, it creates a galaxy-looking combination known as "Fantasy Rock" (term coined by Mark Cole from the wonderful website called "Natures Rainbows"). Fantasy Rocks is a term that only refers to the fluorescent mineral combinations (of at least 3-4 or more glowing color combinations) that only come from the Ilimaussaq Complex in Greenland.
One of the reasons why tugtupite is so unique and rare is because it is "tenebrescent." This means that under daylight, tugtupite appears to be a light pink/white color, but when submitting it to a UV light (and taking it away), then the tugtupite shows a deeper/dark pink color under daylight. This effect only lasts for a few minutes/hours and the effect can be repeated over and over again. Tugtupite is one of the only crystals with this characteristic in the world! And the extremely bright fluorescence also makes this crystal very desirable.
Tugtupite: white under daylight, fluoresces orange under LW UV light, and fluoresces pink SW UV light.
Sodalite: Blue/green under daylight, fluoresces orange under SW/LW UV light (LW is the brightest)
Chkalovite: white under daylight, fluoresces pale green/greenish blue under SW UV light.
Calcite: White under daylight, fluoresces pale white under SW UV light.
Uranyl Ion: white/grey under daylight, fluoresces green under SW UV light.
Hackmanite: A form of pale blue sodalite under daylight, that fluoresces orange under SW/LW UV light (LW is the brightest), and tenebresces purple.
Polylithionite: glittery brown/silver/yellowish under daylight, yellow fluorescence under SW UV light.
Arfvedsonite: black shiny crystals under daylight, non fluorescing under UV light.
This specimen was photographed using a 36 watt shortwave ultraviolet lamp (pictures 1,2,4,5,10), and with a longwave S2+ Convoy ultraviolet flashlight (Pictures 8,9). The pictures have not been retouched.
You can decorate your space with this accent display piece or add it to your personal mineral collection. This specimen is from the Taseq West Slope, Ilimaussaq Complex in Greenland.
*You will need a true filtered Shortwave UV light in order to see the best fluorescent colors shown in the pictures. A Longwave light will show the orange sodalite fluorescence but you will not be able to see the beautiful pink/blue/green/white colors.
Shortwave lamps have a range of 200-280 nm.
Longwave lights have a spectrum of 315-400 nm and are also called UVA.
Please feel free to contact us if you have any questions about fluorescence or fluorescent lights.
*Please keep in mind that exposure to UV light is dangerous. We recommend the use of protective goggles and gloves (or wearing sunscreen in the hands) when handling minerals under UV light*
