*You will need a filtered Shortwave UV light (sw 254nm) in order to see the best fluorescent colors shown in the pictures.*
A Longwave light (lw 365nm) will only show the orange tugtupite fluorescence.
This nice specimen has TUGTUPITE, uranyl ions, and arfvedsonite.
The tugtupite is quite tenebrescent (not photographed). If you would like tenebrescence photos please let us know.
*Regular black lights, purple lights, or blue lights don't usually work for fluorescent minerals, so make sure you use the proper indicated UV light*
*Please keep in mind that the higher the UV light's wattage is, the brighter the fluorescent reaction will be*
Weight: 5.35 oz (151.6 g)
Size: 3" x 2" x 1.5"
Locality: Taseq West Slope, Ilimaussaq Complex in Greenland.
Tugtupite: white/pink under daylight, fluoresces orange under LW UV light, and fluoresces pink SW UV light.
Uranyl Ion: white/grey under daylight, fluoresces green under SW UV light.
Arfvedsonite: black shiny crystals under daylight, non fluorescing under UV light.
One of the reasons why tugtupite is so unique and rare is because it is "tenebrescent." This means that under daylight, tugtupite appears to be a light pink/white color, but when submitting it to a UV light (and taking it away), then the tugtupite shows a deeper/dark pink color under daylight. This effect only lasts for a few minutes/hours and the effect can be repeated over and over again. Tugtupite is one of the only crystals with this characteristic in the world! And the extremely bright fluorescence also makes this crystal very desirable.
This specimen was photographed using a 36 watt shortwave (254nm) ultraviolet lamp, and with a longwave S2+ Convoy (365nm) ultraviolet flashlight. The pictures have not been retouched.
-Shortwave lamps have a range of 200-280 nm. (254 nm are recommended)
-Midwave lights have a spectrum of 280-315 nm and are also called UVA. (310-314 nm are recommended)
-Longwave lights have a spectrum of 315-400 nm and are also called UVA. (365 are recommended)
Please feel free to contact us if you have any questions about fluorescence or fluorescent lights.
*Please keep in mind that exposure to UV light is dangerous. We recommend the use of protective goggles and gloves (or wearing sunscreen in the hands) when handling minerals under UV light*
