*You will need a filtered Shortwave (SW 254nm) UV light in order to see the fluorescence shown in the pictures*
*Regular black lights, purple lights, or blue lights DON'T usually work for fluorescent minerals, so make sure you use the proper indicated UV light*
*Please keep in mind that the higher the UV light's wattage is, the brighter the fluorescent reaction will be*
This specimen contains fluorescent Calcite and some other minerals with unconfirmed identity.
We mined this piece and a few similar other ones at Sterling Hill Mine (Between the Noble and Passaic Pits) a few years ago. Most of these unknown pieces remain in our collection until we can get a definite answer as to what they all are.
The specimen hasn't been tested but the suggestions are that the pink fluorescing mineral could be meionite, or a scapolite series. Could be a type of feldspar?
The black mineral was thought to be massive hendricksite, but it could be gahnite/other.
There are a few specs of white/blue/yellow fluorescing mineral as well.
Once we get it tested we will update the listing, but for now it remains unidentified/unconfirmed.
Weight: 4.22 lb - 1915 g
Size: 8.5" x 5.5" x 2.25"
Origin: Sterling Hill Mine, Ogdensburg, New Jersey, USA.
This specimen was photographed using an Engenious Designs filtered shortwave (SW 254nm) ultraviolet flashlight. The pictures have not been retouched.
*You will need a true filtered Shortwave UV light in order to see the fluorescence shown in the pictures.
-Shortwave lamps have a range of 200-280 nm and are also called UV-C. (254 nm are recommended)
-Midwave lights have a spectrum of 280-315 nm and are also called UVA-B (310-314 nm are recommended)
-Longwave lights have a spectrum of 315-400 nm and are also called UV-A. (365 are recommended)
Please feel free to contact us if you have any questions about fluorescence or fluorescent lights.
*Please keep in mind that exposure to UV light is dangerous. We recommend the use of protective goggles and gloves (or wearing sunscreen in the hands) when handling minerals under UV light*
